About
My main medium is painting and I find it to be ever-present and genuinely fascinating in its own intuitiveness and metaphysicality. We create symbiotically, without established rules and specific instructions, trusting chance. I mostly work with the themes of childhood-adolescence and age transformations, mental health issues, queer body image, the exploration of sexuality and gender identity, magic and occultism. Finnish by ethnicity, I was raised in a close connection to nature and magic which influenced my practice.
I believe that art is important, first of all, as a reflection of an individual personality and the miracle of its uniqueness, which, ultimately and contradictorily, unites us all. I create because I simply cannot help but create, it is the only way of communication with the world that I understand. There have always been too many feelings, worries and passions in me to remain silent and if silent, to remain whole. I feel great tenderness and compassion to the world, and believe in our unity and the importance of every existing voice. I find my works radical and somehow metamodernist, because they allow for the existence of sincere, real, living things of a small human soul, one of thousands. They are countercultural, without worries about relevance, fashion, the needs of the market. I live in the reality of childhood fears, memories, dreams, obsessions and impulses. I cherish my own expressiveness, maximalism of media and content, as a bright consequence of “immaturity”; perhaps eternal, perhaps perishable, and therefore even more valuable. Working on the task of combining vulnerability with violence, harsh with ephemeral, irony with honesty.
I stand against the idea that art should be distinguished by the relevance and immersion in the historical and cultural context. After all, an artist, like any person, cannot be measured by necessity and usefulness, and we all know the name of such ideas. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to share my soul with others, to give visibility and reduce loneliness. For the suffering, the marginal, the too tender, the dependent and the small.
